Danny Dyer has been the iconic cockney landlord Mick Carter for the past nine years in EastEnders.
In January 2022, Danny Dyer announced that he would be leaving his role as Mick Carter in EastEnders at the end of the year. Now, the time has almost come for him to leave Albert Square, though the plot of his departure is still unknown. Here is everything you need to know about Danny Dyer’s decision to leave the BBC soap opera after nearly ten years as the Queen Vic’s manager.
Why is Danny Dyer leaving EastEnders as Mick Carter?
Before it was revealed years later that Mick Carter (played by Danny Dyer) was actually Shirley Carter’s son, he joined the EastEnders cast as Shirley’s younger brother.
Mick took over the pub with his ex-wife Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) and their crew of kids, and since then, has given viewers a wealth of suspenseful and touching tales to enjoy.
However, actor Dyer announced in January 2022 that Mick’s time on EastEnders would come to an end when he left the show on Christmas Day.
He clarified his desire to leave Walford in order to pursue other opportunities.
In a statement, Dyer said: “I’m 44 now, and I’ve had nine years of playing Mick and I think he needs to be rested for a bit.
“I’m still looking for that defining role. I don’t know what that is yet. Maybe it is there, maybe it isn’t.
“But I’ve always been quite ambitious and I had quite a long career before I went into EastEnders.
“I know the landscape has changed slightly but I want to go out there and have another go, and the only way I can do that of course is if I decide to walk away from the job.”
Exactly how Mick will be saying goodbye isn’t yet known but when Dyer spoke on Jaime Winstone’s new podcast, Greatest Night Ever in September, he teased that he could return.
He said: “Let me tell you something now – Mick’s exit is going to be a very, very powerful thing.
“I would love the door to be left open, and as far as I know it is.
“So, who knows, when I go out there and I fail miserably I can come back with my tail between my legs and go ‘Will you take me back?’”
Does this mean that Mick Carter won’t be killed off, with a possible comeback in the future?
Dyer hasn’t let the grass grow as he already has his next project in the pipeline.
He is going to lead the upcoming action thriller Heat on Channel 5 which started filming in Victoria, Australia, last month.
Dyer said: “I can’t wait to get amongst this beautiful piece of work in Australia. I’ve always been intrigued about working there.
“It’s my first gig since EastEnders. Heat has a powerful, dark script and a strong Australian cast and crew. Let’s have it!”
