The soap will soon be saying farewell to the iconic character.
A befitting sendoff for EastEnders legend Dot Branning has been promised (played by the late, great June Brown). But with so many details about this special episode of the BBC soap beginning to surface, you might be wondering when we can anticipate seeing both Dot and June honored on screen.
Read on as we fill you in on all the information about the upcoming farewell because we have gathered all the most recent news. When new details are made available, we’ll also update this page, so come back often if you’re looking for updates.
When will Dot’s funeral air on EastEnders?
The episode about Dot’s funeral hasn’t been given a set air date as of this writing, but filming has recently begun, so it will probably air later this year.
Several cast members, both past and present, have been filming at a graveside, and James Bye, who plays Martin Fowler on EastEnders and Strictly, recently warned fans to expect a very emotional send-off for the adored character.
Any EastEnders fans will find it difficult, he said. “because it’s so tear-jerking. The actress who plays Sonia Fowler, Natalie Cassidy, gives the performance of her life. Not a dry eye can be found in the house.”
Who is coming back for Dot’s funeral?
Six well-known characters are returning to Walford to pay their respects to Dot, according to EastEnders. The first re-appearing actor was Jacqueline Jossa, who plays Lauren Branning, Dot’s step-granddaughter, in the same movie. There are also some celebrities in the mix who haven’t appeared on the soap in decades.
You can read more about each character’s individual history here. The complete list of returning characters is below.
Colin Russell – played by Lord Michael Cashman CBE
Barry Clark – played by Gary Hailes
George ‘Lofty’ Holloway – played by Tom Watt
Mary ‘The Punk’ Smith – played by Linda Davidson
Disa O’Brien – played by Jan Graveson
Lauren Branning – played by Jacqueline Jossa
The audience will recall that Tom Watt and Linda Davidson, who played Lofty and Mary, previously made a comeback after 30 years. Barry and Disa haven’t been seen since their initial exits in 1989 and 1991, while Colin visited Dot in 2016.
This will be the first time Barry and Colin have appeared together on screen since they were the first same-sex couple to kiss on EastEnders.
