Despite being gone, Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) is still remembered. Given that Chicago Fire viewers have had a few opportunities to see/hear from the character since his formal departure in season 10, the gone portion of the argument is also up for debate.
The fact that Jesse Spencer and Fire showrunner Derek Haas are so adamant about keeping the character in the mix shows how much they value him. Along with Severide (Taylor Kinney), Casey is one of the original cast members of the show, so there may be some confusion about his age.
So, this is what we were able to unearth.
How old is Jesse Spencer?
Like his lifelong friend Severide, Casey has never received a correct age designation on the show. Nevertheless, there are several context cues that can help us pinpoint a year or at the very least a brief window.
According to the episode, Casey completed the Fire Academy in 2003 and started working in 2004. Given that Casey must be 21 years old to join the Chicago Fire Department, we can estimate that she was born no later than 1983.
According to the original script, Casey was supposed to be 35 in the pilot, but as we already stated in the Severide piece, this age feels more like a pre-casting placeholder than an unquestionable fact about the character. The difference is not too far off because Spencer was 33 at the time.
But this tiny difference brings us to the most telling sign of Casey’s age: the actor’s age. TV shows frequently utilize the actors’ ages as a gauge for the characters’ ages, and it appears that the showrunners have done so in this instance.
Spencer, who is 43 years old and was born in 1979, was born. We may fairly conclude that the character’s birth year corresponds to that of his off-screen counterpart since Casey had to be born before 1983, as we already determined. He’s 43, a year older than Severide, and if he decides to return to Chicago, he’ll be able to fight fires for another ten years.
