Paddy Kirk, who recently narrowly avoided dying on the ITV soap opera Emmerdale, is attempting to live day by day there.
Dominic Brunt’s portrayal of Emmerdale mainstay Paddy Kirk made viewers cry when he expressed thoughts of suicide after his mental health reached an all-time low. Even though the village doctor refrained from taking his own life, he still needs to heal a lot. The Paddy actor Dominic teased thesuns.info about the person who assists him in regaining his sense of humor in upcoming scenes.
After finding out that his wife Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) had an affair with Al Chapman (Michael Wildman) the previous year, Paddy fell into a deep depression.
He had been having trouble focusing at work, and he had begun to lose his temper around his loved ones.
Since his failed suicide attempt, Paddy’s best friend Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) has been calling to see how he’s doing, but Paddy is not at all like he used to be.
Even though Marlon and Paddy want to be left alone, his family is still there for him because they want to make him feel better.
Dominic expressed to Express.co.uk his opinion that he believes men “suffer in secret” when dealing with mental health issues.
He’s opened the door to [suicide] now, he’s capable of having those thoughts of attempting to take his own life, and he’s going to have to watch that for the rest of his life, Dominic said in regards to Paddy’s future on the ITV soap in the wake of the heartbreaking suicide attempt.
Fortunately, the narrative isn’t abruptly ended like that, and there will continue to be hints—hopefully forever—that he is capable of doing that.
The actor revealed that “there is also a lot of light” as well, which is some good news for his character.
He clarified: “What Emmerdale consistently does brilliantly, in my opinion, is [ensure] that it’s not a misery fest.
“The pace is really well matched to the dark story, which is not what makes it so unpleasant to watch.
There are small glimmers of hope that he has rediscoverd his sense of humor, but he must also keep an eye on himself.
The actor described how Paddy overcame his fear of asking for assistance from his loved ones.
Dominic said: “He normalises the talking, so he has a little slump and then he turns to someone and says, ‘Are we alright to grab a cup of tea, I just want to talk about something which is bothering me?’
“He goes, ‘Yeah, yeah of course.’ So I am really glad it’s being normalised.”
The actor didn’t specify which male character Paddy confides in over a cup of tea, but could it be his closest friend Marlon?
While Paddy continues to struggle with depression, Marlon has promised to be by his side.
Dominic spent months speaking with organizations and people connected to mental illness to better understand Paddy’s mindset after being given the suicide storyline in August of last year.
He said, when asked about Paddy’s suicide attempt: “I was hoping this story might make a difference and normalize talking.
“Talking is the one thing that will help you, whether it ends with medication or not, no matter what you are going through, whether it’s a mental bump or a terrible lifestyle choice.”
