After 11 years on the soap opera Emmerdale, Priya Sharma will make a dramatic exit in upcoming scenes.
After suffering second-degree burns and having her love interest leave Emmerdale, Priya (played by Fiona Wade) has had a difficult year in the village. Actress Fiona acknowledged it was “one of the hardest decisions” she had ever had to make when it was announced last year that she would be leaving the ITV soap.
The trauma Priya experienced when murderer Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu) set the Maize Maze on fire will be discussed in Priya’s final scenes, which will air the following week.
After 11 years at Emmerdale, Fiona said of her decision to leave the soap opera: “It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make.
“Leaving my Emmerdale family is a big thing, and filming my final scenes wasn’t easy.
“It’s difficult and depressing when you’ve lived somewhere for that long and that’s your everyday life.
However, as every actor is aware of, it’s also crucial to push yourself.
Fiona continued, “It takes her by complete surprise because she’s been fully in control of this event and she’s been organized, felt in charge, and everything’s gone so well. Her exit involves a veil catching on fire at the Take a Vow event.
She is in a good mood when that incident occurs, which is a huge shock and throws her into a completely different frame of mind.
The incident brings back memories of the maze fire in which Priya suffered severe burns.
“It’s hugely triggering,” Fiona remarked. “She feels it is a major setback.
“The way she reacts to it – her body and her mind – it takes her straight back to the fire.
“She freezes and has a breakdown which takes her by surprise because she feels she’s done so much work on herself after what happened.
“In the last few months she’s felt like her old self and feels it’s a major setback.
It isn’t, but it does help her realize that what she’s been through is still present and hasn’t simply vanished.
The eating disorder and the accident in the fire were two of the many wonderful storylines I’ve had, Fiona said when asked about her favorite.
It’s difficult to choose just one because they have all been so emotionally draining, but they have all been incredibly rewarding to play.
“I can’t choose a favorite, but the research on the eating disorder was so fascinating because it was complicated and ongoing.
It was a wonderful addition to my character. She has a lot of layers underneath her glamorous and assured exterior.
It revealed her complexities, vulnerability, and insecurities. I believe this is the reason I have always adored Priya.
Co-stars Chris Bisson and Rebecca Sarker organized a drinks party as she was getting ready to leave the show, and there she received some “gorgeous gifts.”
