Tuesday night, viewers of Emmerdale witnessed Al Chapman’s brutal departure from the soap opera.
The long-running rivalry between Al (Michael Wildman) and Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) in Emmerdale came to a grisly conclusion on Tuesday’s episode. He confronted him in a barn before shooting him to death after his relationship with Cain’s sister Chas (Lucy Pargeter) became public knowledge. Actor Michael Wildman acknowledged that he was aware that Al’s time on the show was finite after three years of portraying the part.
It’s no secret that Al and Cain have had a bad relationship ever since Cain joined Emmerdale in 2019, with tensions growing over time.
Despite having their own partners, the Dale villain has been having an intense affair with Cain’s sister Chas over the past few months as viewers of the ITV soap opera have watched.
This week, Cain found his sister’s burner phone that she had been using to contact Al, which infuriated him.
Al is shocked to see Cain waiting for him with a shotgun when he enters a barn expecting to see Chas.
Despite the fact that the Monday episode ended on a cliffhanger with a shot heard following a struggle for the gun, it was revealed on Tuesday night that Al had actually been killed.
His partner Kerry entered the room and yelled for her daughter to call an ambulance as Cain fled the scene, leaving his bloody body on the floor.
Although Al’s departure came as a shock, actor Michael Wildman acknowledges that he sensed things for Al were intensifying over the previous 18 months because there was really no good reason for him to continue.
His son Ellis had left, so when our executive producer called to say, “We are thinking of letting Al go,” I told her, “I am with you – so long as Al doesn’t leave in a taxi,” he said in a statement to the Mirror.
“Last night, Al most definitely went out with a bang, just as I had hoped he would. I’m overjoyed. The 50th anniversary celebrations have been fantastic, and now would be a wonderful time to pass away.
Al’s departure marks the fourth death to occur on the soap over the past three weeks, as Emmerdale went all out to celebrate its significant milestone month.
The first victim was Faith Dingle, who made the tragic decision to take her own life after learning that she had terminal cancer. Next, Liv Flaherty perished when a caravan was tragically thrown over her during a storm, killing her instantly.
Harriet Finch, who was involved in a quad bike crash before a bolt of lightning caused an explosion on the vehicle, was another character to leave the soap opera as a result of the storm.
The 52-year-old actor admitted that he felt a lump in his throat during the filming of Al’s final scenes because he had grown close to the cast and crew of the soap opera.
“You share so much with each other, like having children or losing loved ones, and I feel like I’ve found a new family,” he continued. A position like Emmerdale will follow you forever.
After Kerry revealed to the police who she had seen in the barn when she discovered her fiance, it appears that another departure may be in the works as a result of Al’s passing.
It didn’t take long for the police to arrive at the house as he hurried inside to try to quickly speak to his wife Moira and his children.
Stepping outside, spectators saw Cain being taken away by police, leading many to wonder if he would spend the rest of his life in prison.
His sister Chas arrived just as he was being taken into custody and learned that her brother was being accused of killing Al Champman.
