This week’s news that Chloe Harris’ (Jessie Elland) infant was being treated for meningitis in a hospital brought back memories of the little time Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) and Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) had with their own newborn, Grace, for the Emmerdale villagers.
After Chas discovered she was pregnant in February of that year after failing to take her contraceptive injection, Grace was born in October of that same year.
Sadly, Grace passed away just 29 minutes after her birth. Chas and Paddy were informed that Grace had a disorder called bilaterial renal agenesis, which meant that her kidneys and bladder had not developed.
In the ITV soap opera that aired on Friday, May 5, Bear (Joshua Richards) expressed anxiety after noticing Paddy on the couch so early in the morning.
Bear questioned whether Paddy had been there all night after hearing him tell his father that he had just softly gotten up.
Paddy and Chas had been texting after finalizing further divorce-related paperwork, and they were also encouraging one another after learning about baby Reuben.
Paddy ultimately chose to withdraw from the community, however he wasn’t entirely honest about this decision, which worried his friends and family.
After learning that Paddy had vanished once more, Rhona (Zoe Henry) gathered outside the bar with Marlon (Mark Charnock), Chas, Mandy (Lisa Riley), and Bear.
Given that Paddy had been considering suicide the last time he went missing, Marlon and Chas had reason to be concerned.
Paddy called Chas and revealed that he was sitting by Grace’s tree, which was a sign that things were still under control for him.
The former couple discussed their loss and how it might occasionally reemerge due to the most trivial of things, like watching something on television or listening to music.
Paddy explained to Chas that although though it’s a sign his recovery is progressing, there are moments when he may go a whole day without really thinking about Grace, which makes him feel like he’s leaving her behind.
She grasped Chas’ hand and reassured him that no matter where they go or how much time passes, they will never leave Grace behind since she understood how Paddy had felt.
