On Emmerdale the following week, Bernice visits the doctor after feeling off, but she is unprepared for what Liam tells her.
Since experiencing a number of symptoms, Bernice (Samantha Giles), a 53-year-old beautician, has been experiencing a range of emotions.
Bernice bemoans her lack of sleep to her sister Nicola (Nicola King) in Sunday’s episode because it has made her forget the day and miss the dedication of the village’s new anaerobic digester.
When Bernice hurried down Main Street and discovered that everyone had left, she was devastated. Later, she learned from an engineer that Rishi (Bhasker Patel) had been given the privilege of cutting the ribbon.
Bernice snaps at the engineer, forcing him to flee as a result.
The following week, Bear (Joshua Richards) finds himself in Bernice’s crosshairs at PampaManda after making a poor joke about her.
Already agitated, Bernice retaliates by dousing him in water from the hose. However, she strikes a new potential client of Mandy’s (Lisa Riley) who has just entered the salon, not Bear!
Bear and Mandy are powerless to do anything but watch in horror as Bernice rushes to turn off the water, drenching the care home manager.
Bernice then storms out, unable to control her emotions, leaving Bear and Mandy wondering what has become of her lately.
Bernice eventually asks Bob (Tony Audenshaw) for a shoulder to cry on as she shares how she’s been feeling. Although Bernice can be a drama queen at the best of times, Bob urges her to schedule a visit at the doctor’s office and becomes concerned when she begins to cry.
Bernice is convinced that dementia accounts for all of her symptoms after daughter Gabby (Rosie Bentham) unintentionally mentions dementia, which she witnessed in her late father Ashley (John Middleton).
Bernice is immediately in denial when Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) makes an alternative suggestion. But when Dr. Liam (Jonny McPherson) later makes the same diagnosis, she is not pleased.
He thinks she is going through the menopause rather than having dementia.
Bernice storms out in a rage. If the advice wasn’t embarrassing enough, her ex-boyfriend gave it to her, which makes it even more embarrassing!
But the warning signs have all been there, becoming especially clear earlier this month when Bernice was in court supporting her sister Nicola.
Bernice, who was frequently running to the bathroom and was thirsty, annoyed Laurel and her brother-in-law Jimmy (Nick Miles) by waving a battery-operated fan while complaining about the temperature in the public gallery. She had a quieter hand fan with her the following day.
Will Bernice be able to accept that this point in her life has come, or will she look for a different diagnosis?
Marlon (Mark Charnock) is overwhelmed when Ryan offers him his job back at The Woolpack elsewhere in the village (James Moore).
Marlon is worried when he notices that a full-time chef job has been advertised because agency workers have been filling Marlon’s previous responsibilities up until this point. However, he is unable to get any responses from a disinterested Charity.
Ryan tells him that his job is always available for him if he wants it back when he later runs into Marlon and learns that Marlon has been helping Victoria.
Marlon acknowledges that the day with Victoria had worn him out and that he wouldn’t be able to handle it full-time, despite the fact that he has been making good progress in recent weeks as he continues to recover from his stroke last year.
They want him back and are willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen, so he is touched when Ryan then suggests he could return part-time, perhaps with an assistant to help out.
