Emmerdale youngster Cathy Hope has sparked concern among viewers after her health seemed to take a turn on Friday night.
Cathy Hope’s (played by Gabrielle Dowling) behaviour seems to have spiralled out of control lately and things are set to get worse for the Emmerdale teenager. After a number of meltdowns, Cathy decided to see Manpreet Sharma (Rebecca Sarker), who put the youngster on the pill in a bid to control her heavy periods. However, during Friday’s ITV episode, Cathy got drunk and went on a rampage, leading fans to believe there is something more sinister wrong with her.
As Cathy and her friends walked to the gig with a bottle of alcohol in hand, things took an unexpected turn.
Cathy jumped up onto the bridge, with April Dingle (Amelia Flanagan) quizzing her pal on how much she’d had to drink.
“I don’t need any! I’m loving life!” Cathy shouted as she span around on top of the bridge.
“She’s off her head,” April said to Cathy’s dad Bob (Tony Audenshaw) who looked on in horror.
After his daughter lost her balance and nearly fell off the bright, the cafe owner hurried to help her.
Bob screamed at his daughter, “You’re going to fall,” as he arrived just in time.
Has anything been taken by you? Manpreet quickly raised the question before Cathy interrupted her.
According to Bob: “You’re skipping class, and now you’re acting insane. What is happening?”
When April revealed their intention to attend the concert, Cathy said: “We just wanted to have some fun, that’s all. I merely desired to be joyful.
“She’s been struggling with anger and tears, hasn’t she?” Bob asked an anxious Wendy. She’s now on something, high.
Can I speak with you, Bob? Manpreet contributed. “I am aware that she has been experiencing period issues. You are correct that this is different, though.
I believe you need to take her to A&E. Request the crisis team, who can evaluate her mental health.
“Bob, Cathy put herself at risk, I think it’s prudent as her doctor,” she continued.
After the episode, viewers discussed Cathy’s plot on social media. Many of them speculated that Cathy may have more sinister issues.
Tweeted @Roseville Girl: “Regarding Cathy while watching #emmerdale I wonder if she has a mood disorder related to the hormonal imbalance, such as manic depression, which her periods aren’t treating. She recognizing the crisis team so quickly was the most incredible part!” (sic)
Speculation from @maitra sulagna: “Cathy, her mood swings, is that what bipolar disorder looks like? #emmerdale.”
While @katemackay55 added as follows: “Cathy should have been admitted as an inpatient due to her behavior because she poses a risk to both herself and other people. #Emmerdale.”
“A personality disorder, Cathy? I said that in #emmerdale weeks ago “Carol 44698330 left a comment.
Ryan The Soapking continued, saying: “I hope that #Emmerdale is covering bipolar with Cathy. This is such a poignant and important story, especially for Cathy, who is still so young. Cathy will face a difficult road ahead of her but can receive support, as we saw with Jean and Stacey Slater in EE.”
“Yes you are Cathy, possibly bipolar #Emmerdale,” wrote @liadaksy.
Follower @WiniBoansi posted: “Oh my goodness, bless Cathy. Depression does take many different forms. #Emmerdale.” (sic)
