Thursday’s tearjerking hour-long episode of the ITV soap opera Emmerdale starring Emmerdale veteran Paddy Kirk had viewers in tears as the village vet considered suicide.
On the most recent episode of Emmerdale, Paddy Kirk’s (played by Dominic Brunt) mental state had reached its lowest point. The beloved character had intended to commit suicide, but changed his mind after Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) and his ex Chas Dingle discovered him with a gun (Lucy Pargeter). Fans believe Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller), who left the soap in order to help Paddy, will return as a result of his focus on getting better.
In the tragic episode, Paddy had heartfelt conversations with his loved ones while secretly saying his final goodbyes.
Eve “deserved better,” but Paddy told her he “loved her more than anything” as he bid her good night.
The veterinarian sobbed: “I’ve got to leave tomorrow. You’ll all realize it’s for the best, though, eventually.”
Later, as his father Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards) vanished from the village, he wrote a suicide note to his father.
Paddy was eventually discovered in a field by his closest friend Marlon, who assisted in persuading him to lay down the gun and head back to the village.
Paddy’s safe return home was a huge relief, but the character’s gloomy thoughts won’t go away right away.
He’s always been close with Chas’ son Aaron, who some fans hope can support Paddy during this trying time.
When Aaron learns about the vet’s suicide plan, he may decide to go back to the Yorkshire Dales because he has always viewed Paddy as a father figure.
Emmerdale viewers shared their thoughts about the heartbreaking episode on Twitter, with many calling for Aaron to return to the village to help.
Naja penned: “@DannyBMiller, please come back to the village! It’s breaking my heart seeing Paddy going through this alone. Paddy helped Aaron – now it’s time Aaron helps Paddy #Emmerdale.”
Pixxalt said: “I keep saying this but if Aaron doesn’t have some kind of involvement/mention in Paddy’s storyline then the writers have missed a very important (and obvious) mark. #emmerdale.”
Sulagna added: “Paddy!! Think of Aaron. You think he is happy in a foreign land. But really he would rather be with his family #Emmerdale.”
Eli said, “Aaron would see what Paddy was doing #Emmerdale.
Others who were watching the emotional ITV episode were in tears in droves.
said Emma Oldershaw: “I had to take my glasses off after tonight’s episode because I was crying so much!
This was so masterfully executed. I cried during that scene with Paddy and Eve. Excellent work from everyone involved, and a very accurate and sincere portrayal.”
Mike revealed: “Paddy bidding Eve farewell. Seeing this is so heartbreaking. Even though it’s not real, one man is currently experiencing what Paddy is in reality. Never, ever say that soap operas don’t depict real-life events! Depression in men does exist. #Emmerdale.”
Paddy actor Dominic opened up to Express.co.uk and other media about his character’s suicide attempt.
He said: “I just tried my best, I don’t know. I couldn’t even let myself open a little door to the black dogs these people experience, it’s just, I was pretending.
“The script and the dialogue was so good and the journey there was so clear, it was almost easy to do.”
The actor said he was both privileged and honoured to serve that story to ITV viewers.
