The ITV soap opera Emmerdale aired an episode on Wednesday that left some fans perplexed by a glaring error. Emmerdale fans rarely forget a storyline, so a plot hole never gets past them.
In the episode of Emmerdale, Matthew Wolfenden’s character David Metcalfe was incensed to learn that Priya Sharma (Fiona Wade) and their daughter Amba were relocating to London (Ava Jayasinghe). Later, he pretended to have pardoned Priya for hiding the information from him before ominously leaving with Amba in the car and making it clear he wouldn’t be allowing the move to go through. Fans quickly noticed a mistake with the main plot, though: David isn’t supposed to have a driver’s license.
Because Leyla Cavanagh (Roxy Shahidi) was venting her resentment over Priya getting the job she had been after, David learned about the plans.
“Didn’t get the job, then?” David asked as Leyla fumed about not leaving.
“No, they gave it to Priya,” she replied, rolling her eyes.
“Thought the job was in London,” David responded, to which Leyla said: “Yeah, it is.”
Realising her mistake, she added: “Oh my God, Priya hasn’t told you…”
“Are you absolutely sure about this?” a worried David asked.
“I’m so sorry David, I thought she’d have told you by now,” Leyla continued.
“I’m losing Amba and I get no say in it?” he raged. “When are they going?”
David’s rage seemed to subside later, and Priya agreed to follow through with their pre-arranged childcare plans.
As Priya waved him and Amba off, David reassured her that he was “over” his irritation; little did she know that he was actually preparing to abduct their child.
David suggested that they embark on their own adventure after Amba told her father with excitement that Priya was taking her on “a forever adventure.”
As the episode came to a close, he drove off in a suspicious manner, leaving Priya unaware.
However, viewers were still aware of David’s recent loss of his driver’s license.
In an effort to keep his license intact after being recently caught speeding, David claimed Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) was the one driving so that she would be assessed the points instead of him.
He received a letter from the police addressed to Victoria, which contained all of his lies, so his deception quickly backfired.
Fans who remembered the plot from late November quickly used social media to criticize the recent driving storyline’s discontinuity.
@sallyjane90, a user on Twitter, wrote: “Did you believe David lost his license? Are we supposed to already have forgotten this? #Emmerdale.”
Fan @leahallen77 replied, “Oh aye that’s right, forgot about that one #Emmerdale,” in response.
“He lost his license, didn’t he? @funkygibbons tweeted: “#Emmerdale,” to which @BerniKennedy replied: “Didn’t David lose his license? #Emmerdale.”
Another point was made by @Zombiechick1967, who shared: “David is planning to flee with the child; keep in mind that just a few weeks ago, he was penniless and was forced to sell his company due to mounting debt. On a fiver, you won’t get very far! #Emmerdale.”
You have now lost shared custody, bruv. #Emmerdale, according to @Jamal06122771, who also wrote: “And like the idiot David is, he’s going to make more problems for himself.”
