Dot Cotton, a longtime fixture in Walford, will be sadly missed by EastEnders, and her funeral will introduce a fresh face to Albert Square.
Fans of EastEnders will be moved to tears this week as the drama airs two episodes centered on Dot Cotton’s funeral (played by June Brown). Dot passed away last week at the home she shared with her grandson Charlie Cotton (Declan Bennett) in Ireland, shocking grandaughter Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy). Soon after learning the sad news, Sonia set to work planning a funeral honoring the legendary and unforgettable Dot.
Fans have seen Sonia looking through Dot’s old photos, talking to the reverend about the ceremony, and revealing to Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) the flowers that will be placed on the coffin.
She is making every effort to plan the ideal tribute for her grandmother and has called on some of her closest friends and family members from all over the world.
Dot’s stepgranddaughter Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa), Colin Russell (Michael Cashman), and Lofty Holloway are a few people who will be traveling back to Walford, especially for the funeral (Tom Watt).
Reiss Colwell, Dot’s great-nephew, was one face at the church that Sonia didn’t recognize.
Reiss may not have been personally invited to the event, but despite his nervousness, Sonia and Reiss clicked right away.
Actor Freeman hinted that there will be romance between the two, but fans will just have to wait and see how everything turns out.
He said to the press, including Express.co.uk: “Reiss has been introduced to the square, there is chemistry between him and Sonia, and while I wouldn’t call him a human Dynamo, he does have a good heart.
“What will happen is to see if he can successfully negotiate some fairly fundamental social interactions or if he will end up by himself.
But I suppose that will become clear in due course.
With her daughter Bex Fowler (Jasmine Armfield) leaving for travel, her demanding job, and Rocky Cotton (Brian Conley) impersonating her father as part of a money-making scheme, Sonia hasn’t had the best time in Walford lately.
So it makes sense that the worn-out nurse hasn’t exactly been upbeat in EastEnders.
However, Natalie Cassidy, who plays Sonia, has said that viewers will start to see a different side of Sonia now that Reiss has joined the Albert Square team.
Reiss’ character has entered, and the writers and Chris [Clenshaw, executive producer] have done something really clever.
“Let’s face it, Sonia has been somewhat unhappy, and she also has a lot going on.
“Remember that she’s a nurse; she works very hard; Dotty is always on her case; Dot hasn’t been around.
“And I feel like it’s going to be an exciting time,” she continued, “saying goodbye to Dot and being very, very upset and having this little shining beacon of light come in.”
“I won’t give too much away because I can’t, but with the work I’ve been doing lately, I really feel you’re seeing the light and the comedic side of Sonia come back,” Cassidy continued.
I haven’t played that in a while, and I think it’s really special, so I’m really enjoying myself.
