Following his troubling behavior, EastEnders viewers speculate that Ben Mitchell might be the focus of an eating disorder plot.
Fans of the BBC soap opera may have noticed Callum Highway, Ben Mitchell’s (Max Bowden) partner, has been vocal about how much Ben seems to be drinking over the past few weeks. Tony Clay plays Callum Highway. While drinking, the EastEnders character doesn’t seem to be eating much, which raises the possibility of an underlying eating disorder.
When the two decided to invite Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) to join them for a curry and beverage at Peggy’s, that was one of the first indications that trouble was brewing.
Callum noticed Ben hadn’t really touched his food while he was there and advised him to cut back on the alcohol so he wouldn’t get wasted.
Although the detective had already told Ben to slow down earlier in the week at the Vic, this was not the first time he had to do so.
Callum told Ben to go get a packet of crisps to try and get sober as he was celebrating his promotion.
Although resisting his request, Ben replied: “It’s too late to line my stomach but I am going to get a drink.”
As the Mitchell boy has continuously avoided food and opted for an alcoholic drink instead, it didn’t take long before viewers took to social media to suggest there was trouble ahead.
BallumOfficial commented: “Hard to tell if this is the start of anything.”
Simbanrat added: “Ben not eating and drinking too much. Something is going on with him.”
“@bbceastenders,” said FriendlyPerso. I assume that Ben’s drinking is leading somewhere. Even Callum picked it up. #eastenders”
Ben has been drinking a lot, and Callum keeps mentioning that he hasn’t been eating, so I wonder if he’s abusing it or has an eating disorder, Natashate1983 tweeted.
The commenter Wee Westie29 said: “I would say alcoholism. But given that Honey’s eating disorder stopped EastEnders from doing it, I could see it happening again, this time with Ben. #Eastenders.”
“I think they want us to focus on the drinking and not the purposeful not eating part,” tweeted user buttonalltheway. It’s odd that they have commented on his lack of appetite.
Ben was the focal point of a terrifying storyline on EastEnders last year following a horrific rape.
Before learning that Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold) had terminal cancer, the Mitchell boy had little chance to process what had happened to him.
Could not processing what happened last year lead to his drinking and poor eating habits?
Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) has experienced heartache elsewhere in the soap opera after losing her infant daughter Peach.
She became pregnant following a one-night stand with Zack Hudson (James Farrar), but later discovered the baby had Edwards’ Syndrome, which shortens life.
Whitney and Zack have been finding it difficult to deal with their grief since making the difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy.
While dealing with all of this, Zack has been keeping Whitney in the dark about his HIV diagnosis.
In later scenes, he is urged to tell Whitney everything as he confides in her at the Vic.
