This year’s Christmas episode of EastEnders broke viewers’ hearts, and the residents of Albert Square are still reeling from the loss of Mick Carter.
Fans of the BBC soap opera have, however, noted that one character was left out of the poignant scenes in which Mick’s (Danny Dyer’s) close friends gathered to remember the pub owner.
Callum Highway (Tony Clay) was not present when Harvey Monroe (Ross Boatman), Mitch Baker (Roger Griffiths), and Rocky (Brian Conley) raised a glass in honor of their friend. Viewers of EastEnders quickly pointed out the odd “snub” on social media.
Following the tragedy on Christmas Day, feelings were running high as the residents of Walford learned of Mick’s presumed drowning.
While Denise (Diane Parish) and Jean (Gillian Wright) worked to comfort their bereaved friend, Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) hid in The Vic and attempted to drown her sorrows.
Mick’s friends conversed privately about their loss in the meantime.
“Strange, isn’t it? The bar being closed, “Rocky remarked.
“Yeah. Do you know, I keep hearing Mick’s voice in my head,” Mitch replied.
“I didn’t get the chance to tell him how important he was to me. You know, what he really meant.”
“He knew,” Rocky remarked reassuringly, while Harvey added: “Yeah, of course he did.”
“Yeah, but women properly talk to each other you know, about emotions and stuff,” Mitch commented.
“They’re always saying, ‘I love you,’ or signing of texts with heart emojis or ‘kiss kiss kiss.'”
“Yeah, well just because we don’t say that sort of thing don’t mean we don’t feel it,” Rocky pointed out.
He told the grieving friend: “He knew Mitch, he knew.”
“No harm in saying though, right?” Harvey added before thanking the two men for being there for him in the past.
The three then raised a glass in honor of Mick as they struggled to accept his passing.
Nevertheless, Callum and Mick had a close relationship as well; in fact, Callum had chosen Mick to be his best man.
When he first moved to the Square, the policeman also initially resided with the Carters.
Social media users from the soap opera called attention to the oversight by asking: “What was the point of having Callum at Mick’s stag and wedding if we’re not going to see his reaction to Mick’s ‘death’?”
“Mick was like a father to him; please, Eastenders, show us his reaction.”
Does Callum and Jack know about Mick or are they just unconcerned?, wrote @tamlizann. @bbceastenders #EastEnders (sic)
“This lack of Callum in Eastenders is actually getting really stupid now,” continued @TheSuper6536. Mick’s passing? In and out of the holiday episode? Right now, it’s just laughably unrealistic. For about five or six months, we didn’t even see his apartment. #EastEnders.”
“No reaction from Mick for Callum on #Eastenders?” Zoe4UmbrAcad asked a question.
As @lovelylaurajd noted, “Callum lived with the Carters when he moved to Walford, had Mick serve as his non-best wedding’s man and viewed him as a surrogate father, and also attended his most recent stag do and wedding… but, as usual, receives no response to his disappearance to date. So annoying, #EastEnders
According to @star collector_, Mick served as Callum’s father figure.and supporters are still aware of that. He is entitled to an answer, and his emotions must be expressed. Justice for Callum, please.
