Stephen Reid, the assassin of Coronation Street, now has another potential foe to be concerned about tonight (March 6).
Stephen is making an effort to focus on seizing control of Underworld, but his recent unintentional engagement is now becoming a significant deterrent.
Last week, Stephen accidentally added LSD to his own drink. When he lost control while using the drug, he turned to his friend Elaine Jones for support.
Elaine misinterpreted Stephen’s comment and erroneously assumed that he was popping the question because she was ignorant of the true cause of his odd behavior.
In the episode airing on Monday, Elaine eagerly anticipates her future with Stephen but is unaware that he has no real romantic feelings for her.
Elaine looks into purchasing a rural cottage where she and Stephen can make their home. Tim Metcalfe, her son, notices what she is looking at and becomes concerned.
Elaine is happy for everyone to know that she is now dating Stephen, despite keeping her engagement news a secret.
They’ll be spending a lot of time there, so Elaine says she’s looking at houses and heeding Stephen’s advice.
Tim worries about his mother because he still doubts that Stephen will treat her well.
The Weatherfield taxi driver is particularly concerned in light of Elaine’s prior experience with the violent Geoff Metcalfe.
Can Stephen find a way to persuade Tim, who is undoubtedly keeping a close eye on him, to change his mind?
Stephen’s on-screen actor, Todd Boyce, recently spoke about their relationship, saying: “Men can be a little leery of him, despite the fact that he has successfully charmed Elaine, Rita, Jenny, and Sarah. He is incredibly shameless, despite his veneer.”
Asked whether Stephen genuinely cares for anyone, Todd replied: “He hasn’t shown a lot of care or compassion. David has bugged him and got under his skin – it is a good job David is otherwise distracted, otherwise he may have been a real problem to Stephen.
“He has avoided spending a lot of time with his mum and is just using Elaine, as we know.
“The couple of exceptions are perhaps Sarah, who he does have a lot of time for and is close to, but of course he saw much more of her in the past out in Milan.
“And he is still attracted to Jenny – that is really where it could go wrong for him if he gets distracted by her. He sees the life he could have had with Jenny and that is the life that he wants.”
