Coronation Street fans have watched Ken Barlow battle with his emotions after a former flame returned to Weatherfield last week.
Since Martha Frazer (played by Stephanie Beacham) returned to the cobbles last month, Ken (Bill Roache) has found himself falling back into old habits. Despite his current relationship with Wendy Crozier (Roberta Kerr), it’s clear that his old feelings for Martha are resurfacing. Actor William Roache has teased over the next few weeks his character has a big decision to make on whether or not to stay in Weatherfield.
Last month, Ken got a big surprise when rehearsing for the Community Centre play when his old fling Martha walked through the door.
After not seeing her for 13 years, Martha came back to help Mary (Patti Clare) with some acting tips as she struggled to tone down her performance.
Ken and Martha have naturally gravitated towards each other since she came back and despite his relationship with Wendy, who was also once his mistress, he seems to be repeating history.
In upcoming episodes, viewers will see the long-running cobbles character get a tempting offer which could see him leave the show completely.
Martha decides to ask Ken to go to Hull with her and move away from Weatherfield, mirroring her same request in 2009 when she asked him to go to London.
Although at the time he decided to stay with his wife Deirdre, could Ken now be tempted to go and live out his dreams among actors and writers with Martha?
Speaking about the offer, actor Bill confessed his character is flattered and surprised at the thought of leaving with Martha.
He said: “To have Martha again offer him that lifestyle is beyond his dreams so he’s obviously very interested and it hits him deeply.
“The writers have been very clever here because you can see both sides.”
The 90-year-old shared Martha’s request portrays Ken’s two different lifestyles, the one he has at the moment with Wendy which is good and the one that he dreams about.
He continued: “Ken’s dreams are still there and they’re offered to him again, they don’t go away with age, so it’s a big decision to make.
“The only difference is Deirdre isn’t there and he’s moved on in years.”
The Coronation Street star, who has been part of the show since its first-ever episode in 1960, said that Ken’s decision will also impact him.
William continued to thesuns.info: “He doesn’t know what to do and quite honestly neither do I.
“If he goes with Martha I’ll leave the Street and that would be a pretty big upheaval now!”
Other characters in the soap are also starting to notice the bond that Ken and Martha have as it leaves some feeling uncomfortable.
After a successful performance from them all at the community centre, Martha then invites them all to a party to celebrate.
Ken decides to lie to the group and make up a story about how his partner Wendy is busy and can’t go although he’d be happy to still attend.
Noticing the obvious chemistry between them both, the sparks between them starts to unsettle Brian (Peter Gunn).
