Justice for Bernie!
In tonight’s Coronation Street (19th October), Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) was arrested for burglary thanks to her dubious doppelgänger Fern (Gabrielle Glaister).
Bernie received the incorrect order at a posh clothing store a few months ago, and a woman showed up to claim the posh jacket as her own. That woman was Fern, and she and Bernie soon put their arguments aside long enough to realize how much they looked alike!
Bernie, who frequently struggles with money, was taken aback when Fern suggested a cunning way to make money – by impersonating her at a speed awareness course, which Fern would pay Bernie to attend on her behalf. Bernie made an effort to decline the offer despite being aware of the potential trouble it could cause her, but more bad luck made her accept.
Fern was not to be deterred when she recently arrived on the cobblestones to visit her “new friend” after Bernie had declined further work with her. Fern sent Bernie out with money for takeout after telling a frazzled Bernie that the cleaning company she was applying to was unreliable. Fern also used the opportunity to steal Bernie’s clothes and ID.
She was spotted this week at a jeweler’s dressed as Bernie, and she was very convincing! Fern even tried to speak like Bernie before keeping an eye out for the keys so she could take all the jewelry when the owner left to lock up. Bernie, who was arranging a quiet afternoon at home by himself, received a call from Fern.
She made sure Bernie wouldn’t have an excuse, then committed the theft. When Bernie and her boyfriend Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) left the Rovers later, they were met by police as they made their way home. Bernie was unaware of the situation at the time. Following Bernie’s quick arrest, she was shown CCTV footage of a woman who resembled her robbing the jewelry store.
When it finally dawned on Bernie that she was innocent, Bernie argued that Fern had set her up. Bernie claimed she had been framed, but the officer didn’t believe her.
How will poor Bernie proceed now? Can she provide evidence of Fern’s misdeeds?
Stars Glaister and Hazlegrove developed the plot on their own after frequently being mistaken for one another, but we had no idea it would turn out to be so cunning!
