The ITV soap has introduced a dark consent storyline.
After being sexually assaulted by Aaron Sandford on Coronation Street, Elle Mulvaney said her character Amy Barlow “wants a sense of justice” (James Craven).
Amy passed out after drinking too much on Friday, March 3rd, in the ITV soap opera’s dark consent storyline debut.
Soon after Aaron had a fight with his girlfriend Summer Spellman, the episode showed Amy and Aaron sharing a drunken kiss in the apartment they share (Harriet Bibby).
The two then went to the bedroom, where Amy confessed that she felt ill and rolled away from Aaron as he continued to undress her and rape her.
When discussing the events’ aftermath with Digital Spy, Mulvaney described her character as follows: “Amy seems to be seeking a sense of justice. She primarily wants Aaron to admit it, but if he also faces criminal charges, it will have been established beyond a reasonable doubt that he is guilty.”
She went on: “Most importantly, Amy wants Aaron to understand that what he did was wrong because she is concerned that he might harm someone else. Has he already hurt Summer in this way? She is thinking about a lot of things.”
According to spoilers, Amy will confront Aaron in upcoming scenes, who implores her to put the incident behind her.
Aaron tries to persuade Amy that she wanted to have sex as badly as he did and that they are both equally to blame for what happened when Amy claims that she was far too inebriated to consent.
Later in the week, Summer declares her intention to enroll at Manchester University in order to be close to Aaron. Amy, however, implores her to think about her other options, which leaves Summer perplexed.
