With the most recent plot for young actors Amy Barlow and Aaron Sandford, Coronation Street will address the issue of non-consensual sex.
Young Amy (Elle Mulvaney) of Coronation Street is currently heartbroken after her boyfriend Jacob Hay (Jack James Ryan) left Weatherfield. The support of Amy’s flatmate Aaron (James Craven) and his girlfriend Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) is about to turn sour.
On Friday, March 3, the plot is set to begin, and viewers will see Aaron and Summer argue angrily before he kisses Amy at their apartment.
The pair enters the bedroom in the dramatic scenes, and Amy starts to undress before admitting she is ill and rolling away from Aaron.
Aaron brushes off her remark and keeps kissing Amy, who is oblivious to what happens next as he decides for her that they will have sex.
When Amy realizes how far things went the previous evening the following morning, she is horrified and starts to feel betrayed by her friend.
The realization that she was raped and unable to give her consent to sex causes her to struggle with her emotions.
Amy is skeptical of Aaron’s claims that he did anything wrong because they were both in favor of it happening.
The plot develops as family, friends, and the police become involved, exploring the various perceptions and understandings of non-consensual sexual activity as both teenagers struggle to come to terms with what happened that night.
I’ve been struck by the number of people who have put their hands up to say they’ve had a similar experience to Amy since we started discussing this storyline, producer Iain MacLeod said when explaining the decision to highlight it.
“This story will be incredibly relatable, and we hope that it will spark important conversations about consent among our audience.
The story will also be a compelling, in-depth investigation of how Amy and Aaron handle what happened that evening, and it will provide Elle Mulvaney and James Craven with the opportunity to display their considerable talents.
According to Elle, who plays Amy, “I was initially quite anxious to take on the storyline as it’s such an important issue and we wanted to get it right.
“There are so many different perspectives from the characters, but for us, it was crucial that when we depicted that night, it was obvious that even though Amy doesn’t explicitly say it, she doesn’t agree.
“The characters were getting closer before the event, but just because they were friends doesn’t mean it’s okay for him to do what he wants; this shouldn’t be a grey area. As a result, we had to emphasize her typical behavior in the lead-up to the episode so that she didn’t act uncharacteristically.
Being a young actress on the show and receiving a storyline like this is huge because it demonstrates the team’s confidence in us and gives us the courage to tackle the story.
“The story won’t end here either; it will be intriguing to see how Amy’s character changes because this will stick with her for a very long time.
“It’s important to note the way it will affect her mental health and well-being going forward which is something else we want to highlight with this story.”
The moving narratives are intended to start difficult discussions among friends and family members about issues surrounding young people’s sexual activity, such as consent, awareness, respect, and education.
They collaborated with The Schools Consent Project to make sure the soap appropriately handles the plot.
A charity that was founded in the beginning of 2015 sends volunteers who have received legal training into schools to present workshops on the legal definition of sexual consent and the most serious sexual offenses.
