EXCLUSIVE: Coronation Street viewers will see the ITV soap tackle non-consensual sex between friends Amy Barlow and Aaron Sandford.
In upcoming scenes in Coronation Street, Amy Barlow (played by Elle Mulvaney) will find herself as the victim of rape as her friend Aaron Sandford (James Craven) fails to read the non-verbal signals following her drunken state. Exclusively speaking to thesuns.info
and other media, actor James touched on what lies ahead for Aaron following the harrowing story.
Amy has been helped by her friends Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) and Aaron after the recent breakup of her boyfriend Jacob Hay (Jack James Ryan).
The two girls argue in scenes that will air this week after Summer makes a joke about Jacob moving on.
Aaron and Summer’s relationship isn’t exactly smooth sailing either because she was incensed to learn he had been talking on the phone with his ex late at night.
Aaron chooses to celebrate his promotion to mechanic after his probation, despite the tension between them all, at the Bistro.
Although Amy and Aaron unexpectedly kiss while getting ready at the apartment, she feels guilty and decides to return home after they leave because of their chemistry.
Aaron soon after, and the entire evening, he and Summer fight, making their friends uncomfortable.
Things quickly change as Amy and Aaron play drinking games and consume a lot of alcohol while feeling both resentful and angry towards the people they are romantically involved with.
Amy calls out while leaving to get more alcohol because she feels sick and collapses onto the bed. Aaron climbs in next to her and decides that they should go further while she is completely unaware.
Speaking to thesuns.info, James spoke about what the storyline could mean for Aaron’s future.
Asked if this could change his character going forward, James was questioned whether or not he believes the mechanic will remain in Weatherfield.
He replied: “Who knows? I mean hopefully there’s some sort of, not necessarily redemption, because how do you redeem yourself from that?
“But hopefully I’d like to hope he makes amends for it and tries to realise his wrongdoings and tries to make up for it.”
After the incident, viewers will see Aaron somewhat brush off Amy’s worries about what happened throughout the subsequent episodes.
Aaron’s main concern is betraying his ex-girlfriend Summer, which makes it clear that he doesn’t think anything wrong with what happened.
James continued, “I believe his first thoughts after waking up are, ‘Oh god, I just slept with my ex’s best friend.’
“Initially there’s no thought in his mind that he’s done anything wrong.
“I think he’s also trying to piece together what happened as well and he’s got this thing going on ‘did that really happen?”
“It was so out of nowhere for him and it just took him by surprise.”
