As newcomer Esther makes a startling proposal, Harriet Bibby has spoken out about the upcoming Summer Spellman pregnancy storyline on Coronation Street.
Next week’s episodes will feature scenes in which Summer learns she is expecting a child. Esther (Waterloo Road’s Vanessa Hehir) suggests that Summer allow her to adopt the child because she and her husband Mike are unable to conceive their own child.
Harriet has acknowledged that Summer is “completely shocked” by the proposal, particularly given the fact that she doesn’t really know the couple and only recently met them.
“I believe that she is aware of their goodness and trusts that her assessment of them is accurate, but Summer has a strong sense of right and wrong, so as soon as they make a suggestion, she questions whether or not it is morally appropriate. Is this against the law?” she questioned.
“She thinks Esther is crazy, but as soon as she speaks to her, she feels a connection to her as a woman. I believe that she recognizes and empathizes with her desire to simply be a mother. It’s a significant consideration, in my opinion, when Summer begins to realize that she softens and actually considers the proposal.
When discussing in more detail whether Summer’s choice will be her own or influenced by others, Harriet said, “she’s got a lot of options.”Nevertheless, her own upbringing does affect her decision-making.
She continued, “The fact that Summer was adopted also plays a role in this. She is very content with the way her life has turned out since meeting Billy, even though she is unaware of who her biological parents are.
Therefore, if she believes that her baby would live a better life elsewhere if she were unable to provide for it, she is not opposed to the idea. I do believe there are occasionally too many cooks in Summer’s life.
There are a lot of different viewpoints, and not everyone in Summer’s life agrees that a particular choice is the best one. Everyone is advising her to take different actions, but in the end, I believe Summer will have to take the lead instead and declare that this is what I want to do.
Asked if she thinks Summer deserves a break or if she enjoys the storylines, Harriet responded, “A little bit of both, really. Summer just wants this normal life, to get herself a job, get back on track, and to find herself again because she lost that during the last year.
“But then, yes, she just keeps getting these curveballs, so I guess this is another obstacle I’ll have to overcome. Yes, I was quite surprised, but I was also extremely happy because, of course, you want to be able to write these stories and throw these curveballs.
There are so many conversations to be had about this plot and so many different opinions to be heard Playing is incredibly exciting because of that. I don’t think I’d want it any other way, so I feel so lucky that they are keeping me busy and that people like watching me on television.
