Next week on Coronation Street, Griff asks Max to tell the truth to the police while Nick experiences a nightmare due to the arrival of Jacob’s estranged father.
It has taken Jacob (Jack James Ryan) a while to change his ways, but is everything about to fall apart due to the surprise visit of the former drug dealer’s estranged father Damon (Ciaran Griffiths)?
When Damon appeared from the shadows at Victoria Street’s Christmas market, any holiday cheer Jacob had quickly vanished. Although Jacob bitterly sent him on his way, Damon is determined to catch up with Jacob.
When Damon asks Jacob for a drink, Jacob politely declines, and Amy (Elle Mulvaney), Jacob’s girlfriend, is shocked to learn that the stranger is actually his father.
Jacob continues by saying that he hasn’t spoken to Damon in a long time and that their relationship hasn’t changed. Jacob believes Damon is a waste of space and that he would be far better off without him. Amy, however, is adamant that Jacob listen to him out because he is family.
Damon is upset to learn about Jacob’s relationship with Harvey (Will Mellor), which resulted in drug dealing and hospitalization, as Jacob reluctantly agrees to meet him at the hotel.
Jacob, who has put all of his problems behind him, demands that Damon leave because he fears that he will ruin the new life that he has been able to create for himself.
Over lunch, Jacob later confesses to Amy that he feels resentful of his father for being able to party it up in Ibiza while he was stuck in Weatherfield getting involved with gangs. Damon is adamant, though, that he wants to make amends to his son.
Is Damon really telling the truth though?
“He’s definitely got an ulterior motive,” Ciaran Griffiths reveals. “He makes out that he’s back to make amends with Jacob, he slowly starts to build up his trust but I think that will be to let him back down again. He’s just using Jacob for his own benefit, which you get the impression he’s done for a lot of his life.”
Indeed Ciaran questions whether Damon has any genuine sympathy after hearing about Jacob’s experience with Harvey.
“I don’t think he does at the beginning, Damon is just all out for what he can get for himself, but maybe down the line some guilt will start to creep in.”
Damon’s true intentions become clear soon enough when he pays a visit to the bistro and introduces himself to Nick (Ben Price), who has recently accepted money from Harvey in order to complete essential maintenance work on the building.
“Harvey has lent this money to Nick for Sam which he’s invested in the bistro but Damon says ‘Actually I lent that money to Harvey so it’s my stake in the business’,” Ciaran explains.
“Nick doesn’t want Leanne to know about the deal he did with Harvey so that’s how Damon has got Nick in his back pocket. He blackmails Nick and puts him in a position where he can’t say anything to Leanne so he’s forced to go along with what Damon wants.”
Regardless of whether Damon is telling the truth, Nick is compelled to go along with it as he introduces Damon to Leanne (Jane Danson), saying that Damon is an old school friend who lent him the money and who also happens to be Jacob’s father.
Leanne is shocked because she thought the funds had come from Sam’s estate fund, but Nick reassures her that she can put her trust in Damon.
Damon makes his move by asking Nick to hire Jacob for a position in the bistro in exchange for the money.
Will Nick have to put up with Damon making all the decisions going forward?
Ciaran continues, “I think he’ll hold onto his stake at the bistro for as long as he can. But if things get too heated, he’ll disappear in an instant, leaving everyone else to clean up the mess.
After attempting to assist Jacob in finding work, Damon moves quickly to try to buy his son’s loyalty by giving him £500 to spend on Amy for Christmas.
While it remains to be seen if Jacob will be able to see through his father’s mask, Ciaran says that since returning from his home in Australia to assume the position, he has enjoyed reuniting with some old friends.
“I’ve been really enjoying working with Jane (Danson) again after our previous collaboration on The Bill. Although we haven’t yet had scenes together, it’s been great to see some other well-known faces like Samia, Andy Whyment, and Alan Halsall. It’s also nice to catch up with some familiar faces because I know a lot of the crew from previous jobs.
When a camping trip with Griff (Michael Condron) goes wrong, Max (Paddy Bever) finds himself in an awkward situation on the cobbles.
When Spider (Martin Hancock), an undercover copper, learns about the gang’s planned outing, he feels uneasy, especially since Max has been invited. The opposite is true for Max, who gladly accepts the invitation to go along despite David’s (Jack P Shepherd) reservations.
Is Griff’s financial supporter someone we recently met? Spider finally learns after doing some investigation in the interim.
Is Spider about to finally come clean about what’s really going on? Spider’s false allegiance to Griff’s far-right group hasn’t been without its sacrifices, as he was forced to let Toyah (Georgia Taylor) dump him because of his beliefs.
Spider begs Toyah to keep his secret as he shares some significant news with her. But does she still have faith in him to do that?
The camping trip quickly turns out to not be what Max had in mind, and when Griff finds himself in legal trouble, Max is the one he asks to tell the truth to the police about what actually happened.
How much longer before Max finds himself in over his head?
