On Coronation Street the following week, Bernie is kidnapped while searching for Fern, and Howard, Fern’s purported ex-husband, makes a mistake. Which side is Howard really on?
In October, Fern (Gabrielle Glaister) pretended to be Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove), obtained employment as a cleaner in a jewelry store, and then stole several high-end items from the establishment before disappearing. No one has seen her since her phone was disconnected, and
After viewing the CCTV footage of a woman who exactly matched Bernie’s description, the police were convinced that Bernie was responsible for the crime and arrested her.
The police have no leads because Fern’s phone is unplugged, and Bernie’s claim that a doppelganger committed the crime doesn’t seem very credible. Bernie realizes she needs to take action when she receives a letter containing the date of her court appearance.
Later this week, Bernie impersonates Fern to try to locate her home address. She goes to Fern’s country club and attempts to con the receptionist into giving her personal information.
When that doesn’t work, she uses her computer to try to access Fern’s information while waiting for the receptionist to move out of the way. She is then startled by another health club member, who immediately begins to question her about why she is on the wrong side of the front desk.
The stranger reveals himself to be Howard, Fern’s ex-husband, when she poses as Fern and claims ignorance. Although Bernie and Fern may appear to be nearly identical, Howard can tell the two apart.
Bernie, though, seems to be in luck. The man is unsurprised when she tells him that Fern stole her identity and put her in court.
She is informed that his ex-wife is a con artist, and it appears that he will assist Bernie in finding her.
Bernie devises a scheme to entice Fern in the episodes that start airing the following week, on Monday, November 14.
She suggests that Howard (Gordon Peaston) and Dev (Jimmi Harkishin) throw a party to celebrate a fake lottery win because she knows that Fern wouldn’t pass up the chance to con the residents of Coronation Street out of yet more money. In the hopes that Fern will be drawn in, they will post the pictures online.
They soon arrive at the Bistro with Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) and Paul (Peter Ash), where they hold their fictitious winners’ party. Fern seems to have fallen for the trap because shortly after, Howard calls No. 5 and informs him that she has been in touch and wants to meet him in the Freshco’s parking lot.
But it’s not that simple, and Bernie is in for a major surprise.
Later on in the episode airing on Monday, a van approaches Bernie as he waits at the bus stop. Before she can react, a man bursts through the door, places a bag over her head, and quickly loads her into the back of his van.
How much danger is she in and where is he taking her?
Then, in the episode airing on Wednesday, November 16, it is made clear that Howard might not actually be on Bernie’s side.
Since Bernie is safely back in No. 5 by Wednesday, it appears that she managed to elude her captors. However, we won’t learn why they fired her until the following week.
When Howard calls No. 5 once more, he makes a mistake when he says how much the jewelry Fern stole was worth.
The ears of Gemma perk up. How exactly would Howard know the value of the loot when he is Fern’s ex? unless, of course, he was involved in the robbery in some way!
