Max Turner being indoctrinated into Griff’s radicalized extremist group is a plotline that Coronation Street has been exploring, but it has infuriated viewers, who have complained to Ofcom.
Max, a young man played by Paddy Beaver, has been hanging out with the wrong crowd and has been pressured into adopting Lauren’s racist views. Over the past few weeks, Max developed a close relationship with Griff Reynolds (Michael Condron) and started to exhibit signs of interest in his group. The storyline has now “disgusted” viewers, who have expressed their opinions to Ofcom.
There have been several complaints about Max becoming radicalized in the long-running ITV soap over the past week.
Since the start of the story, Coronation Street has received 139 complaints from viewers, according to data from Ofcom.
Max has been influenced by his new girlfriend Lauren’s racist views after spending too much time with Griff.
In recent scenes, Max was shown a disturbing anti-Muslim propaganda film before defending his girlfriend from Alya.
He didn’t seem to notice the racist behavior he and Lauren were engaging in, which only increased her concern.
Viewers expressed their fear for Max as a result of the harsh Max’s storyline on Twitter.
“Max, you’re smarter than this,” wrote soap opera fan Mika Dehaan.

As Jack said: “It’s tragic. How can you prevent a young man like Max from turning radical? When the group turns on the weakest, what happens to Max?”
Rhys Thompson added: “This storyline with Max is horrible. I know it goes on but it’s genuinely awful!”
Claire Amers exclaimed: “I’m so scared for Max. Griff and his group are getting in too deep and I’m hoping he can get out of it.” (sic)
However, things went from concern to outrage when Max turned on a refugee from Ira, prompting the Ofcom complaints.
Ofcom revealed 139 complaints on November 16, which it said were “related to the racial violence storyline”.
The racism storyline saw dodgy activist Griff groom Max and forcing him to join his far-right group, with an ambition to make their opinions known in Weatherfield.
Max recently got a job at Speed Daal, where his employers are Alya Nazir (Sair Khan), Yasmeen Metcalfe (Shelley King), Zeedan Nazir (Qasim Akhtar) and ex-friend Daryan.
Now, his new “friends” are turning him against his former employers and friends, leaving them concerned for his wellbeing.
It isn’t just the grooming that fans have been concerned about after many will be convinced she and Lauren are related.
After bedding him to gain his loyalty, Lauren has seemed to have her claws in deep, despite Max disagreeing with her and Griff’s views.
Viewers claimed that Lauren could be Max’s half-sister, after mistaking her for Kelly Neelan (Millie Gibson) who recently departed from the show.
