Iain McLeod, the head of Coronation Street, has made hints about the introduction of some new faces to stir up some drama on the cobbles.
The most recent addition to the venerable ITV soap opera Coronation Street’s set was recently unveiled. A playground, a charity shop, an ice cream shop, and unoccupied maisonettes have all been added to the Weatherfield Precinct. Iain McLeod, the writer, revealed the plans he expects to write for the new set and made some inferences about some newcomers.
Viewers will get their first glimpse of the Precinct on January 12, 2023, when it will be filled with retail spaces and cast members will finally enter the set.
Regarding the maisonettes that are making space for new residents to live there, Iain stated to Express.co.uk and other media: “If we want to create a set for an interior space using any of our exterior spaces, it will need to be built inside a studio.
“Even though the studio is completely full, when the first characters began to arrive, we thought, “Oh, that character can live there, or that person runs away from their partner, they can hide there.”
“So yes, we are definitely already considering who might move into the residential spaces at some point.”
Iain also expressed his pride in the cast and fessed up to the following: “It is exactly what I had in mind.
“We really nailed down the architectural era we wanted it to be after spending a lot of time looking at pictures and existing real-life precincts.
“We wanted it to feel like Salford, earthy and gritty, the kind of place you might visit during the day to buy an ice cream but might not want to visit at night because it’s crowded with kids and other such things.
“Really entertaining features include the playground for children, an ice cream shop, and a charity shop that will soon inspire some stories for us.
“It has a little bit of everything, but it also has the doom, which is where all the bad stuff happens, criminal assignation, and everything else.
“I went around it yesterday and, I have to admit, I was so ecstatic about it that I lost my voice.
“I could only utter the words “I love it” when one of the head designers was present. I am incredibly pleased with it and the attention to detail.”
Two “core characters” will enter the newly constructed charity shop with the intention of making it another well-known location for the soap opera.
The Precinct was officially opened by actors from the soap opera Jack P Shepherd, Sally Dynevor, Antony Cotton, Jimmi Harkishin, Daniel Brocklebank, Channique Sterling-Brown, Elle Mulvaney, Tanisha Gorey, James Craven, and Colson Smith.
The Mirror quoted Rosie Mullins, head of design, as saying: “Coronation Street moved into its new home at Media City back in 2013.
“With this relocation came the exciting possibility to further grow and develop our Weatherfield Community onsite.
“The shopping precincts found in many areas of the UK in the 1960s served as the inspiration for Weatherfield Precinct.
“I wanted the Precinct to have features that people from all backgrounds could relate to. I can’t wait for Sweety Nuff dessert and milkshake shop, Gregory Pope Foundation Charity Shop, Rutlands Bakery, Pound Outlet, and Bargainanza Pawnbrokers to appear on screen.”
Viewers will be thrilled to watch the Christmas Special, which is sure to have hearts full of holiday cheer, before the new set is used in upcoming storylines.
Fiz Stape and Tyrone Dobbs, played by Jenny McAlpine and Alan Halsall, are at the center of the Christmas storylines.
The protagonists of the Christmas specials are also Daisy Midgeley and Daniel Osbourne, played by Charlotte Jordan and Rob Mallard, respectively.
